Keep Screven Beautiful was recently awarded a $2000.00 grant from the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation. This grant will allow KSB to start an Adopt-A-County Road program. Adopt-A-County Road is a litter control program sponsored by Keep Screven Beautiful (KSB) to provide volunteer community support for anti-litter and beautification programs with the potential for a cost of savings to Screven County. Although not required, participating groups may also wish to initiate special beautification projects (e.g. planting flowers, working with land owners to clean-up unsightly private property, etc.) This program will reduce litter along the streets, enhance the environment and beautify Screven County. Any civic-minded organization or group can adopt a section of county road.
Organizations and citizen groups accept responsibility for a minimum of a one mile section of a county road a minimum of four times a year. Due to issues placing signs on dirt roads, you must adopt the entire length of a dirt road. All participants in the Adopt-a-County Road program must sign a waiver and release form prior to working on the streets.
KSB will furnish and erect two road signs indicating the section of road under adoption and the name of the organization. KSB will also supply trash bags, gloves and vests.
Drop by the Keep Screven Beautiful office at 412 Pine Street, call 564-9171 or email at Lisa.Guidos@KeepScrevenBeautiful.com and we will send you an application package. For more information or to download the Adopt-a-County Road application, go to http://www.keepscrevenbeautiful.com/ProjectsAndEvents/AdoptAHighway.htm
Bill Revesz, Stan Sheppard and Lisa went to the Keep America Beautiful President's Circle Awards Luncheon in Washington DC Thursday to accept the William “Bill” Nash Award. Adopt-A-Highway is a litter control program sponsored by the Georgia Clean and Beautiful Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation to attract public involvement in picking up litter along Georgia highways. *
Litter along Georgia highways has reached an epidemic stage. Keeping our roadways clear of litter has proven to be a very time consuming and extremely expensive operation for the Department of Transportation.
This program is gaining attention statewide as it is becoming a major part of our Keep Georgia Clean and Beautiful volunteer network. Adopt-A-Highway is also an integral part of the Department's own anti-littering campaign, "Let's Keep Georgia Peachy Clean."
Who can adopt?
Any civic-minded organization, such as Garden Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church Groups, Junior or Senior High School Student Councils, FFA/FHA, Rotary Clubs, etc. can adopt a stretch of highway (one mile minimum) leading into their community.
What are the responsibilities of an adopting organization?
Through such adoption, an organization would have responsibility of controlling the litter problem within that section of highway. In addition, the organization will:
-
Develop a functional plan that will influence and encourage the public to improve the appearance of their adopted highway;
-
Plan for a general cleanup four times a year;
-
Assist the Georgia Department of Transportation in securing media coverage for the program; and
-
Coordinate with the Department's personnel and Adopt-A-Highway project coordinator to carry out the plan.
What are the responsibilities of the Georgia Department of Transportation?
The Department of Transportation will:
-
Furnish and erect two highway signs indicating the section of highway under adoption and the organization responsible;
-
Furnish manpower and equipment necessary to aid with general cleanups;
-
Coordinate media coverage to inform the public of the program; and
-
Provide assistance by department personnel and project coordinator in carrying out the overall plan.
What is the objective of Adopt-A-Highway?
The objective of the program is to create public awareness of the litter problem along Georgia's highways by making the adopted section of highway an example of community involvement that improves the beauty of the area through volunteer effort.
How do I sign up?
Please drop by the Keep Screven Beautiful office at 412 Pine Street, call 564-9171 or write us at Lisa.Guidos@KeepScrevenBeautiful.com and we will send you an application package. We will be glad to help you with the paperwork.

Keep Screven Beautiful has just signed up for Rivers Alive and we need your help!
Rivers Alive is a volunteer cleanup that targets waterways in Georgia including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources.
This year’s Rivers Alive will be on Saturday, September 29th.
Everyone is invited to participate including non-profit organizations, corporations, community and civic groups, school groups, faith-based groups, individuals, and governmental agencies.
For updated information, call Lisa at 564-9171 or go to Adopt-a-Stream & Rivers Alive.

Screven County residents will soon be able to dispose of scrap tires free of charge thanks to a grant available from the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Keep Screven Beautiful, along with the Screven County Commissioners and the Solid Waste Coordinator are proud to announce that Screven County has been awarded $17,000 from the EPD to help clean up scrap tires around the county.
Disposing of scrap tires properly is important because if let around, they can collect rainwater that creates an ideal habitat for rodents and mosquitoes. In the heat of summer stacked tires can also ignite, creating tire fires that are difficult to extinguish and can burn for months, generating unhealthy smoke and toxic oils.
The scrap tire efforts will be carried out in three phases, the first being in August. The exact dates will be announced within the week.
The collection of the tires will be at the Scale House at the Screven County Landfill. You must be a Screven County resident to participate in this project. You will be asked to provide identification and proof of residency when dropping off tires.
If you have any questions or concerns, call Keep Screven Beautiful at 564-9171 or visit www.KeepScrevenBeautiful.com.
May 6th through 12th is International Compost Awareness Week. The theme for 2007? "The Possibilities are Endless ... Compost!"
Compost is one of Mother Nature's best ways to mulch and add soil amendments to your garden. You can make compost in your back yard with materials around your yard and in your house. Recycling these materials also reduces the amount of waste going into the landfill. According to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, composting saves us money by lowering garbage bills and replacing the need for commercial soil amendments. Composting also saves water by helping the soil hold moisture and reducing water runoff. It also helps your garden by improving the health of the soil.
Composting helps the environment in lots of ways. By creating your own compost pile in your back yard, you are recycling organic materials and saving on the cost of transporting it to the landfill.
For a list of materials you can compost and a list of materials you shouldn't, plus ideas on how to use compost around your home, visit http://www.keepscrevenbeautiful.com/compost.htm or call Keep Screven Beautiful at 564-9171 and request a brochure on composting.
The Screven County Landfill would like to remind you that you can get free compost at the landfill. Come to the landfill Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 AM and 4 PM and someone will help you load your truck. Once you see how it helps your garden, we're sure you'll start making your own!
Over 400 volunteers turned out this year to make this year’s Great American Cleanup our most successful yet. Citizens from all over Screven County picked up almost 11 ½ tons (22,940 pounds) during the week of April 9th through the 14th. Recently, Governor Sonny Perdue unveiled Georgia’s new statewide anti-litter campaign - Litter. It Costs You. The campaign includes a three-pronged approach: Education, Enforcement and Eradication. Part of this campaign includes new and stricter litter laws known as the Comprehensive Litter Prevention and Abatement Act of 2006. This act makes it easier for law enforcement officers to punish litter offenders.
If you are caught littering in Georgia you can be ordered to pay a fine of as much as $1,000 or more. You can also be ordered to clean up a littered area in a community. The act also holds the driver of the car responsible for any litter leaving the vehicle. It doesn't matter if you throw it out or not. This includes a passenger throwing it out of the window or it blowing out the back of your truck.
In fact, the new laws state that you can receive up to a $1000.00 fine for operating a vehicle that does not have the contents covered. It doesn't matter if it flies out or not. So, be sure and tie down anything that you place in the back of your truck. It MUST be secure.
All law enforcement agencies, officers, and officials of the state can enforce the new laws. There are other officials such as the Screven County Public Works Director, the Code Enforcement Officer and the Animal Control Officer that also have the authority to write litter citations.
Visit www.litteritcostsyou.org today to learn more about the new litter laws and visit www.KeepScrevenBeautiful.com to learn how you can help Keep Screven Beautiful.

Harris Sutton, an officer at the Screven County Landfill stands in front of a mountain of cardboard ready to be baled and shipped to a recycling facility in Augusta, Georgia.
Last year, Screven County recycled 373 tons of cardboard. Recycling that cardboard saved the county $13,055.00 in tipping fees sending it to the landfill in Ridgeland, South Carolina. In addition to the money the county saved, the recycling company paid the county $10,714.18 for the cardboard!
Help save the county money, which in turn saves you money by recycling your cardboard. If you have a business, call the landfill at 863-7480 to find out how you can get a cardboard recycling container. Everyone else can save their cardboard and take it to one of our convenient recycling facilities around the county. Call Keep Screven Beautiful at 564-9171 to find the closest facility to you. And, thank you for helping Keep Screven Beautiful!
Keep Screven Beautiful (KSB) wants to remind everyone about the "Bring One for the Chipper", a Christmas tree recycling program. KSB along with the Screven County Landfill, the City of Sylvania and the Georgia Forestry Commission will be collecting Christmas trees until January 7.
After you have taken off the garland and ornaments, bring your Christmas tree to one of our convenient drop-off sites. These sites are located at the recycling centers around the county. (Please do not throw the tree into the dumpster!)
In appreciation of your recycling efforts, when you bring your tree to Convenience Center #1 located at 943 Rocky Ford Road (outside the landfill) on Saturday, January 6, 2007 from 10 AM to 4 PM you will receive a free dogwood seedling, while supplies last.
For more details about the 'Bring One for the Chipper' project, visit the Keep Screven Beautiful website at Bring One for the Chipper or call 564-9171. Thanks for helping Keep Screven Beautiful!
Keep Screven Beautiful (KSB) would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Screven County for a wonderful turnout at the Downtown Extravaganza. Despite the not-so-pleasant temperatures, the night was a huge success! We gave away hot apple cider, donuts, pencils, rulers, trash bags and stickers. Dozens of wildflower seed packets were distributed. These seed packets were donated by the Georgia Department of Transportation to promote their Wildflower Program.
We also had an Opportunity Drawing. Donald Toole won First Prize, a beautiful Christmas gift basket. Cody Lee won Second Prize, a Pancake Breakfast basket. Both gift baskets were prepared and donated by The Cotton Patch.

CHRISTMAS TREES SET FOR THE CHIPPER ON JANUARY 6
Join the tradition and give a gift to nature this holiday season! Keep Georgia Beautiful invites you to celebrate the 17th annual “Bring One for the Chipper” and recycle your Christmas tree after the holidays.
As part of a statewide effort to reuse Christmas trees, Keep Georgia Beautiful at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs has joined with sponsors The Home Depot, 11 Alive (Atlanta’s NBC affiliate) and The Davey Tree Expert Company to sponsor the “Bring One for the Chipper” program.
Georgia residents are invited to bring their trees to a drop off center in their neighborhood on Saturday, January 6, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trees will be chipped into mulch or used as wildlife habitat. The mulch is used for public beautification projects, and in many communities is available free to citizens.
In appreciation of their recycling efforts, participants will also receive a free dogwood seedling, while supplies last.
Beginning in mid December, local drop off site information will be available by ZIP code on the “Bring One for the Chipper” Web site at www.KeepGeorgiaBeautiful.org. Drop off information is also available by calling 1-800-CLEANUP.
Since 1991, “Bring One for the Chipper,” has collected over 4.5 million trees and provided over one million tree seedlings to participants. Last year, more than 225,000 trees were recycled. The program produces tangible environmental benefits while helping local governments comply with state regulations that prohibit the disposal of yard trimmings in lined municipal landfills.
“For seventeen years, ‘Bring One for the Chipper’ and our corporate sponsors have made it possible for Georgians to dispose of their trees in a way that is beneficial to our environment,” said Keep Georgia Beautiful’s Roxi Konnick, coordinator of the statewide event. “Because of this program, thousands of Georgians have made Christmas tree recycling a holiday tradition.”

The Keep Screven Beautiful (KSB) Commission would like to announce the opening of their new office at 412 Pine Street (across from the Syl-View Health Care Center). The office hours are Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 12 PM.
Keep Screven Beautiful is a pre-certified affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Georgia Beautiful. There are several steps involved in becoming certified and KSB has nearly completed the process. Some of the tasks already accomplished are creating a logo, performing a Litter Index of the county and completing a Litter/Solid Waste Survey. The certification process has been underway since July.
Lisa J. Guidos, the newly appointed Executive Director along with the Board Members are working hard to complete the certification requirements. The requirements remaining are to appoint a Chairman of the Committee, finalize a budget and complete the Analysis and Recommendations based on the data obtained from the previous certification tasks such as the Litter Index and the Litter/Solid Waste Survey. The estimated completion of all tasks will be in December. There will be a workshop and celebration once the final report has been submitted and approved by Keep America Beautiful and Keep Georgia Beautiful.
For more information about KSB and how you can help, call 564-9171 or visit our website at www.KeepScrevenBeautiful.com. The KSB Commission wants to thank you for helping Keep Screven Beautiful!
November 15, 2006 is America Recycles Day and the Keep Screven Beautiful Commission wants you to know the facts. Did you know that paper takes up as much as 50% of all landfill space? Or that the energy you save by recycling 1 glass bottle can light a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours? Or that recycling 1 aluminum can can save enough energy to operate a television or computer for 3 hours? You can reduce your household waste by 20 - 40%, as well as reducing the energy and pollution costs associated with manufacturing more materials just by taking the time to recycle. The EPA estimates that while 75 percent of what Americans trash every week could be recycled, only 25 percent is. Here in Screven County, 16% of what is taken to the landfill is recycled. That's good, but we can do better.
What do I do?
It's easy. All you have to do is sort recyclable materials into a container instead of throwing everything into the trash can (please rinse cans and bottles first). You can recycle almost everything. Here is a list of what is recycled in Screven County:
-
Auto: Car Batteries, Used Tires.
-
Glass: Brown Glass, Clear Glass, Green Glass
-
Metal: Aluminum Cans, Ferrous Metals (Steel, Iron), Nonferrous Metal, Tin or Steel Cans, White Goods (Non-Reusable Large Appliances)
-
Paper: Cardboard, Catalogs, Computer Paper, Magazines, Mixed Paper, Newspaper, White Office Paper
-
Plastic: #1 Plastic (PETE), #2 Plastic (HDPE Clear), #2 Plastic (HDPE Colored)
-
Other: Chemical jugs (must be triple rinsed and hole punched), Old mobile homes
Where do I take it?
Once you have the recycled materials sorted, you can carry the items to any of our Convenience Centers located around the county. Here you will find bins for Plastics, Aluminum Cans, Cardboard and Glass. Some Convenience Centers have bins for magazines. Convenience Center #1, located outside the landfill also accepts yard waste, car batteries, used tires, white goods and chemical jugs. Call the landfill at (912) 863-7480 for information on how to dispose of old mobile homes.
Here are the locations of the Screven County Convenience Centers:
Convenience Center #1

Location:
7 AM - 4 PM, Screven County Landfill
4 PM - 7 AM, Just outside landfill
Convenience Center #2

Highway 21,
Location: Next to the White Stag building.
Convenience Center #4

Convenience Center #5

Convenience Center #7

Please make sure that you place your materials into the correct bin and only place recycled materials in them, not household garbage. And please, keep the materials lose, not in bags. The bins are designed so that the doors open and the materials will flow out. This will not happen if the bins are clogged with large bags. The county comes by once a week and empties the containers.
What happens next?
Once the county has picked up the materials, they are taken to the county landfill's transfer station where they are sorted. They are then sold to companies that grind, melt and/or produce new products from them. Screven County currently makes about $27,000.00 on recycling annually with scrap metal, cardboard and aluminum bringing in our largest revenue sources.
Lots of items around you may be made from recycled materials. The very newspaper you're holding now may have once been notebook paper used at an elementary school. Lawn furniture, plant pots, playground equipment and toys may have once been #1 Plastic (PETE) or #2 Plastic (HDPE) bottles. Up to 90% of recycled glass can be reused to make new glass items, such as bottles and jars. Carpeting, roofing, wallboard, paint, insulation, siding, flooring and many other items can all be made from recycled materials. Be sure to look for recycled materials when purchasing new items. That encourages more manufacturers to use recycled materials and completes the recycling cycle.
How does this help me?
You may be asking, How does recycling help me? When you recycle, the county saves money that it would normally spend on sending it to the landfill in South Carolina and it makes money on the recyclable materials, too. Most importantly, recycling makes the Earth a cleaner and healthier place for our children and future generations. It just makes sense to recycle!
