According to the U.S. EPA, every American throws away an average of 1.3 pounds of food scraps daily. In addition to this, yard trimmings and food waste combined make up 24 percent of our nation’s municipal solid waste (MSW) stream. If even half of this can be diverted and recycled through composting, our daily trash levels could start to decrease.
Across the United States and Canada, composting advocates will be encouraging everyone to Compost! Those who believe in the Compost Message will be planning events in their community to promote the value of compost. Compost is one of Mother Nature's best ways to mulch and add soil amendments to your garden. You can make compost in your back yard with materials around your yard and in your house. Recycling these materials also reduces the amount of waste going into the landfill. According to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, composting saves us money by lowering garbage bills and replacing the need for commercial soil amendments. Composting also saves water by helping the soil hold moisture and reducing water runoff. It also helps your garden by improving the health of the soil.

According to Ideal Bite, if 10,000 people compost 3 lb of kitchen scraps each week, we'll keep the weight of more than 10,000 sanitation workers worth of waste outta landfills every year.
Composting helps the environment in lots of ways. By creating your own compost pile in your back yard, you are recycling organic materials and saving on the cost of transporting it to the landfill.

The Screven County Landfill would like to remind you that you can get free compost at the landfill.
Come to the landfill Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 AM and 4 PM and someone will help you load your truck.
