City of Sylvania's Georgia Arbor Day Celebration

Around 60 people attended the City of Sylvania's Georgia Arbor Day Celebration on Tuesday at the Sylvania Amphitheatre on Community Drive. It was a great day to honor trees.

The Sylvania Jr. Woman's Club, Screven County Garden Club and Keep Screven Beautiful partnered to present an Arbor Day poem contest. The winner of the contest was Mikayla Haigh in Jennifer K. Smith's 5th Grade class at the Screven County Elementary School. Click here to read the poem.

Homeowners

As a homeowner there are steps that you can take to celebrate Arbor Day:

  • Learn about the benefits of trees.

  • Plant a tree or care for your existing trees.

  • Support Community Arbor Events - Find out what's happening in your community, so you can join in the fun!

Trees Are Cool
According to the USDA, the cooling effect of a healthy tree is equal to 10 room-size air-conditioners operating 20 hours a day. Planting trees in our cities will absorb 33 million tons of CO2 every year and save $4 billion in energy costs, says the National Wildlife Federation. (From The Real Dirt Newsletter / Organicgardening.com)

Go to http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/CommunityForests/ArborDay/index.cfm for more information
on Georgia’s Arbor Day and tips on planting and taking care of trees during a drought.

For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider,
every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.
- Martin Luther

The Georgia Forestry Commission has made it easy to join in the fun of this individual and community responsibility. Just go to www.gatrees.org to see how you can get involved!

Georgia Arbor Day 2008

Arbor Day is celebrated in Georgia on Friday, February 15, 2008. Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. This year's statewide theme is "Connect and Collaborate! Working Together for a Healthy Urban Forest".

One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.
- Chinese proverb

This year we had Arbor Day plantings with the Cub Scouts (see below), the Screven County Elementary School, the Performance Learning Center and the Savannah River Challenge

Our State Representative Jon Burns donated ten Cherry Bark Oaks to Keep Screven Beautiful through the Georgia Forestry Commission Seedling Program. These trees were planted at the Screven County Elementary School and the Savannah River Challenge.

KSB Helps Cub Scouts Plant Trees

The Community Beautification Committee and Public Information Committee helped plant trees with Cub Scout Pack 391 and the Georgia Forestry Commission on Saturday, February 9th at the Screven County Recreation Department in honor of Georgia’s Arbor Day.

Arbor Day is a time to observe the value of trees - to plant new ones and to care for them
all so they continue to be healthy and helpful.
